Oh and yet another reason why I am not taking up Sumo wrestling anytime soon. Seems these horizontally challenged over eaters are coming down with a viral skin condition linked to herpes. Holy abalone, the condition known as “Herpes gladiatorum” or”scrumpox” (if you live in the UK) has infected 39 sumo wrestlers so far. Herpes gladiatorum is spread through broken skin and is associated with the sexually-transmitted one ie genital herpes. Goodness, what in heavens have these Sumo wrestlers been up to (or down to!).Though they are stressing the condition isn’t potentially dangerous two sumos have already died from it. In the UK the disease is known as “Scrumptox” because it affects mostly rugby players. Symptoms include rashes and blisters and without proper treatment the herpes gladiatorum can hide in nerve cells for as long as they like, reappearing at will.
