Shall We Or Shan’t We?

OK, hold your horses for just one minute. Before any country accepts Gitmo detainees I think it only fair that Obama should first consider plonking them next to Bush and Cheney’s homes. They started it, so they should at least take responsibility for them (imagine, they could all go hunting together). Australia’s Foreign Minister is considering the request by the US Government to take a group of Gitmo detainees that the world has rejected. Mr Smith said he would look at the Chinese Muslim Uighur detainees  on a case by case basis “in accordance with the government’s strict immigration and national security requirements,” And what, pray tell is that, considering how many boat people are being allowed into the country each week? But the big question on everyone’s lips is why wont America take them? Opposition Foreign Minister said on radio “If these people are no longer suspects, we would want to know why the United States doesn’t release them into the United States if they cannot be returned to China,”. OK, just remember, these detainees, having been held for 6 years, have not been charged and are free to leave at anytime. Unfortunately no country so far will accepted them, including the US. Why? Hmm, on a totally different tangent…considering how many Aussie pensioners are living on the bread line and how many citizens have been forced to live in cars in recent months wouldn’t it be a nice idea for the Government to look after their own  first (for a change)!

Psst Now people, before you come out firing, can you give some thoughts and opinions without too much yelling and screaming. Yeah, yeah I know I like stirring the pot and we love people speaking their minds but keep the insults to a minimum :) .

No and I don’t blame them. I’m scared of what they’ll do in this country once they are released.
As for our own poor people, after it was revealed the other day that Malcolm Turnbull and Kevin Rudd are two of the richest men in Australia I think it’s a joke that I feel the need to buy a couple of blankets each week to be distributed to those who ask for one at the St Vinnie’s Soup kitchen. I’m amazed that they both find the need to be politicians. When they retire they get all their super while they try to cut us to the bone and pensions of $150.000.00 per year for life. They have cars at their beck and call, offices and travel expenses paid for. .I’m a carer and my salary is $12,000.00 per year now. I dropped from $55.000.00 to care for someone else with no respite in sight. I’m lucky I had some asetts or I’d be on the street too. I do believe after the budget in May I’ve been awarded $10.00 per week more so that will pay my petrol. As part of pastoral care my daughter volunteers some Friday evenings and she is shocked by the poverty of our own people in Oz. The winter is taking it’s toll on them already and it hasn’t really hit hard yet. Mr Rudd take your stimulus package and shove up your dupa. People earning $80.000.00 and less don’t really need it. Help the poor, the sick and the homeless, In fact use some of these $164 Mill you have and make a nice gesture to the less fortunate. It makes me laugh because in the end none of us are even going to be able to take even a teaspoon with us. Have you ever seen a hearse with a trailer?

I saw a story the other night about a father and son living in a car. The child hadn’t been to school for months because they didn’t have a fixed address (car park wont suffice). Eventually a school in the poorest area welcomed the child with open arms, clothed and fed him. They are still living in their car but…wait for it…they are on a waiting list for emergency housing which is 18 months long! Now how long do refugees have to wait for housing, medical assistance, legal aid when they arrive?

Over here, in the states, we have our rich white guys voting against medical for children. Their reason: Some older people might abuse the system. My thoughts are those same older white guys denying medical for children are already abusing the system. How in the world can one deny a child medical help? There’s something really wrong there.

Te poor, the hungry, the sick and the old are so neglected here in Oz and when I hear on TV we sent millions on a fireworks display my blood boils. Make it a slightly lesser display and give part of the millions to the poor or something. I’d rather be known as a nation of givers than a nation of neglect. We gloss over all the bad stuff here.
