Holy Grail of Western Americana

You go to an antique store and you see a 1870s tintype photo you quite like, so you hand over your two bucks and head off home. Later as you carefully scour your purchase and think…sheez, those people in the photo could be… nah….. could they? Well, they were. The $2 photo shows Billy the Kid and members of his gang playing croquet at a friend’s wedding. The $2 photo is now estimated to be worth $5 million and is considered to be the “Holy Grail of Western Americana”.

PSST I’m wondering if that was his favourite cardy?

Want source with that?

  1. Yes, it is fascinating–but it would probably better be labeled the “Unholy Grail.”

I have no Western American ancestry, to my knowledge–and maybe this is why I can be more objective about it: But this hero worship of murderers like Billy the Kid is a dark twist in the American psyche.

Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Bonnie and Clyde, John Dillinger, Al Capone–these people were vicious sociopaths. They really were no different from John Wayne Gacy, Jim Jones, Ted Bundy, Marshall Applewhite (a.k.a. Do), or Charles Manson.

  2. I have some old family photos I’d sell for half that.

some peeps have all the luck

  4. We are a nation that worships at the feet of murderers. Is it any wonder we are a nation of gun and amosexuals?
