An Icelandic Meltdown

OK, here is our first down payment!

OK, here is our first down payment!

When you thought it couldn’t get any worse for Iceland, Prime Minister Gordon Brown had to go and bring up the Cod War of the 1970’s (remember that fish fight?). Oh boy, Iceland seem to be turning into an economic puddle as the world puts the heat on it. Gordon Brown’s comments have stirred up the little bankrupt community, who can do nothing but take it on their anoraks.Whats more, Gordon Brown has demanded Iceland cough up the £20 billion belonging to British savers, companies and local councils (fat friggin chance of that). And Brown ain’t afraid of using the anti terrorism laws to enforce it, yep he wants to freeze assets of Icelandic companies in the UK! Good god, what are the Icelanders gonna do, throw snow balls and cod at them? Hello, they have zip, nada, zilch. An unnamed British minister was said to have quipped : ‘It’s not Cod War, it’s Wad War’. I am thinking it is a “cold” war! Why doesn’t the world have a heart and just go and have a holiday in Iceland? Oh, yeah, that’s right, no one has any friggin money! 10 Friggin Things About Iceland

Iceland was first settled in 874.(When it was sunny and livable, kidding!)

It is located in the North Atlantic Ocean just south of the Arctic Circle (and just left of friggin nowhere)

Has one of the world’s highest levels of civil freedoms (like anyone cares what they do!)

Iceland is the world’s 18th largest island. (Tourism hasn’t found an angle for that one!)

They have a famous old geyser, Strokkur, which erupts every 5-10 minutes.(Hugh Hefner would be proud, whoops, that’s an old geezer, sorry!)

Iceland winters are mild and windy while their summers are damp and cool.(That translates to friggin cold and friggin wet!)

Very few plants or animals have migrated to Iceland or even bothered to evolve since the last ice age, 10,000 years ago. (Oh, except the Polish and Bjork!)

There are no native reptiles or amphibians (Explains why the French didn’t claim it!)

Icelanders are well known for cuisine and poetry. ( How many words for friggin cold could there possibly be?)

Oh and last but no least, they’re broke! (They can be found on the Who’s Who list of Countries in Recession)

We’re Melting

Iceland is facing a rather bleak winter as it goes head on into an economic meltdown. Unlike the US which is on a fast track to a depression, Iceland looks as though it may end up bankrupt. Another fine mess for the trusted corporate high flyers. So what is a country like Iceland going to do about it? I think they might have to start selling ice to the eskimos.

Friggin Recessions

It seems the US economy isn’t the only one feeling the pain, several countries around the world have fallen into that nightmare known as RECESSION. Ireland was the first to go, followed closely by New Zealand. It is feared that Germany, Spain and Britain are next. So what actually is a recession ? Well Wiki reckons its “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.” Oh crap, that sounds bad! So, I thought the Loon should keep a recession list score card so we can all follow the rapid decline of the world. Here goes …

Whoops, there goes Iceland into bankruptcy. Welcome Aboard the Recession Express UK! Hello Singapore, grab a seat. What took you so long USA? Not like you to be so goddamn tardy, considering you started this whole mess! Make room guys, Germany is here…Ciao Italy….mushi mushi Japan first recession in 7 years (did you break a mirror?). Move aside people, Spain is coming through. Oh boy their last recession was in 1993 (so they should be pretty use to it by now!).
