Elizabeth Pena RIP

Many of you may not know Elizabeth Pena by name, but she had graced our screens (both TV and Movies)  for 40 years. She was one of my fav actresses. She  starred in  “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” “La Bamba,” “Lone Star,” “Rush Hour” and “The Incredibles,”.  I remember her starring in the TV sitcom “I married Dora” (alongside 13 year old Juliette Lewis ) where in the last scene of the series the actors jump out of character to announce the show had been cancelled.

Elizabeth was 55 and left behind her husband and two children  😦

RIP Joan Rivers

yellow-ribbonAnother comedy legend gone. Joan Rivers passed away today after her  life support was switched off following a heart attack last week. I remember when I was about 13 I bought a comedy album called “What becomes of a Legend” by some woman I had never heard of, I played that album until the grooves wore out. A few years back , when Joan was in her late 70s , I saw her perform live in Sydney. It was friggin hilarious. She was on stage for a good 2 hours and didn’t miss a beat. What surprised me the most was how much local and current events she had researched and used in her show.  Love her or hate her, she was a legend. Nearly all my favourite comedians are now gone, Freddie Prinze, George Carlin , Jonathon Winters, Robin Williams and Joan Rivers. What a bummer.

RIP Maya Angelou

I had the pleasure of hearing Ms Angelou read poetry many moons ago when I was but a spring chicken visiting the States.  I had been invited to an African American writers event at ( I think ) the Denver University (Danny Glover was also reading poetry).  I don’t think I have met anyone before or since who  had a more memorizing presence . Her words always slow and deliberate.  The world will be so much darker without you.

RIP Conrad Bain

The actor who played Phillip Drummond, the father figure to Willis and Arnold on the ill fated TV sitcom  Different Strokes, has passed away at 89. Todd Bridges,  the only surviving member from the original cast, said of his passing “In addition to being a positive and supportive father figure both on and off-screen, Conrad was well-loved and made going to work each day enjoyable for all of us. He will be missed, but never forgotten.”.

Woman In Coma For 42 Years Passes Away

The last words that Ewarda O’Bara said to her mother before slipping into a coma in 1970 was “Promise you won’t leave me, will you, Mommy?” . And her mother and family kept that promise. Ewarda passed away today after spending 42 years in a coma after falling ill as a teenager and slipping into a diabetic coma. Edwarda’s mother stayed by her side for 38 years of those years,  talking, reading and playing music to her. During those 38 years she cared for Edwarda at her home, refusing to institutionalize her, and had not slept for more than 90 minutes at a time. When Edwarda’s mother died 5 years ago Edwarda’s sister took over the care taking, which required her to be turned every two hours. Rest in peace.
