An orthodox Jewish couple, who own a holiday flat in Bournemouth, Dorset, are suing their management company because they believe their human rights are being breached because of an automatic security light. The Colemans, who have owned the holiday home for 6 years, were horrified when 6 months ago the management installed motion-sensing security lights in the communal hallway of the flats to save on electricity.Hmm, an automatic light which switches on when it detects movement is in violation of their ultra Orthodox religion, which forbids the use of electrical items on Sabbath. They are now virtual prisoners in their own home (well, on Sabbath). Despite the Colemans offering to pay for an override switch to disable the sensor during Sabbath the Embassy Court Management Company say no, because that would set an “unacceptable precedent”. The other 35 tenants are backing the management company.

A note to all ultra-orthodox Jews, if you want to use your cell phones on Sabbath and religious Hols you can now use your teeth! Yep, that’s right, you can place a special metal pin in your mouth and press buttons on your phone without getting yourself in trouble. Under normal circumstances religious Jews are not allowed to travel, cook, work or use phones from sunset Friday to Saturday night. However they are allowed to break the Sabbath rules if they are required to save a life.So Jews working as volunteers or in emergency services are now free to use their teeth.
